TWITTER LYRICS
Project
Twitter Lyrics, information visualization application (prototype). Amsterdam, Netherlands. 2010
www.alimdardesign.com/twitterlyrics
Project was realized at the University of Amsterdam by a multidisciplinary team (artificial inteligence, information science, new media and digital culture, and graphic design). The purpose of the project was to visualize and comprehend the influence of lyrics from popular songs on the Twitter community.
By extracting
quotes (lines, verses) from Twitter messages and by visualizing frequencies of
their appearances, we developed a new rating system that could provide a more
accurate insight into the perceived ‘value’ (social value) of a song (unlike the ratings of standard music
industry charts).
Chart design (detail)
The chart shows popularity (rankings) of songs according to both, music industry (e.g. Billboard) and TwitterLyrics ratings. Horizontal bars represent songs, and phrases from the lyrics are highlighted within the songs. Color (hot-cold) marks the ranking of a song on the Twitter Lyrics chart (i.e. how often the lyrics from the song are quoted in Twitter messages).
